Wow. Color me surprised.

I really ought to get around to graphing specific makes/models and their weight gain over time. I think it'd be an interesting graph.

The new Golf TSI is updated, lightened and more powerful. It now has roughly the same weight and power numbers as a 1987 Saab 900 Turbo! Less than half the cargo capacity though

I'd be interested to see just how much weight loss is going on with new models now that that's a "thing". I have a suspicion it's still going up, now just with a decreased slope.

It probably costs the same now too! Except 20k in 1987 works out to 35k today.

And the Golf's MPG average is over 30, whereas the Saab struggles to break 25. The devil is in the details when you play this game, isn't it?

Remember they've totally fucked up fuel economy numbers on pre OBD cars. The average for a 900T is about 31, I see 34.5 regularly (60/40)

And yes inflation is fun. Mine would sticker today for $42k

It's only a matter of time. Material and production costs for lightweight components are lowering, which hopefully means more adoption (and lower costs still) very shortly

Kinda sad that automakers have to overcome the "burden" of safety

That's good...but holy shit it's strange-looking in the front...looks less modern than the old one for sure.

Well the styling itself is not that futuristic to begin with. It's meant to be evolutionary not revolutionary.

True..but something seems off. It's not bad at all..just somehow looks like they went back to the Mk V.

I can see that. Maybe they had a better response to the looks of the MkV.

Maybe so...it was a good looking car.

Full disclosure: I prefer the MkV, especially the GTI. The honeycomb grill looked so much better in the larger rounded grill.
